Revamped “Kokua for the Philippines”

raises $1,758,386.42 as of 4:30 p.m.

HONOLULU (Dec. 15, 2013) – “Kokua for the Philippines” organizers had to quickly revamp their benefit today as severe weather came across Oahu and cancelled the outdoor concert and televised portion of the fundraiser. The event was moved inside and continued as a radio and internet broadcast and raised $1,758,386.42 as of 4:30 p.m. to benefit the victims of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines. Proceeds from the phone bank and on-site gifts were donated to the American Red Cross for disaster relief. Organizers also announced donations will continue to be accepted at www.kokuaforthephilippines.com. Ticket holders are encouraged to make their ticket purchase a donation. However, refunds will be provided to those who request. Further information will be forthcoming and posted at www.kokuaforthephilippines.com.

 “Kokua for the Philippines,” a revamped Hawaii-based radio, television and Internet benefit concert for the victims of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines, was held on Sunday, Dec.15, 2013 from approximately 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. The event, staged by Clear Channel Media + Entertainment Hawaii and Oceanic Time Warner Cable, was held at Hilton Hawaiian Village Waikiki Beach Resort and was broadcast live on local radio and via the Internet.Producers from Ohana Broadcast Company, Kapono Inc., and Island Film Group oversaw the production and production services were provided by NEP Supershooters.

Performers appearing on shortened event included: Henry Kapono, Mick Fleetwood, Kristian Lei, Amy Hanaiali’i Gilliom, a special appearance by Jimmy Buffett with Jake Shimabukuro, Brother Noland, Aidan James, Clifford Naeole, Kealoha, Kalei Gamiao, EMKE, AJ Rafael, and Marco Lopez.

Performers who previously been scheduled to appear on the original program included: Kalapana; Raiatea Helm; Makana; Sean Na‘auao; Loretta Ables Sayre; Kuana Torres Kahele; Da Braddahs; Roman of Kolohe Kai; Rebel Souljahz; Natural Vibrations; Jordan Segundo; Starr Kalahiki; Honolulu Jazz Quartet; Sing The Body; Taimane; and Streetlight Cadence.

Renowned marine life artist Wyland painted a giant original canvas featuring humpback whales, live on stage throughout the event; Mick Fleetwood even added a few brushstrokes. The painting is going to be auctioned off in the future with 100 percent of the proceeds going to Kokua for the Philippines. Among the celebrities also appearing and helping with phone bank duties included Mark Dacascos and Cast & Crew members from the hit CBS drama HAWAII FIVE-0 including Chi McBride, Dennis Chun; Alex O’Loughlin; Daniel Dae Kim; Grace Park; Al Harrington; Teilor Grubbs. In addition, Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell participated in the phone bank.

On-air personalities from Clear Channel Media + Entertainment/Hawaii hosted the revamped program. In addition, Ohana Broadcast Company, and local broadcast and cable TV stations had been scheduled to host in the original program. Honolulu Star-Advertiser and San Diego Union Tribune provided additional support.

The original program was to have been aired on a variety of television stations including scheduled to air the event (in whole or in part) were to have included KFVE, KGMB (CBS), KHNL (NBC), KHON2 (FOX), KIKU, KITV 4 (ABC), CW, Me-TV, OC 16 and the San Diego Union Tribune’s UT-TV.  The event also was to have was streamed live on the websites of Clear Channel Media + Entertainment/Hawaii, OC 16, KHON2, KITV 4, Hawaii News Now, and the San Diego Union Tribune, as well as on the event website, www.kokuaforthephillipines.com. HONOLULU (DEC. 10, 2013) – Mick Fleetwood and Jake Shimabukuro have been added to the entertainment roster for the Dec. 15 benefit concert event “Kokua for the Philippines” the Great Lawn at Hilton Hawaiian Village Waikiki Beach Resort. Fleetwood will be performing with longtime friend Henry Kapono. Renowned marine life artist Wyland will be painting a giant original canvas featuring humpback whales, live on stage throughout the five-hour event. The painting will be auctioned off with 100 percent of the proceeds going to Kokua for the Philippines. Celebrities also scheduled to appear and help with phone bank duties include Mark Dacascos and Cast & Crew members from the hit CBS drama HAWAII FIVE-0, among others. Local entertainers added include Brother Noland, Taimane, Streetlight Cadence and Kristian Lei.
